The narrative begins in 1947 as the Partition looms. Jeet's world and life is in chaos as he succumbs to the aftermath of the birth of his child and flees with Aalia to the roof of their tenement building. Unbeknownst to him, the building's Muslim occupants have been rounded up and sent to a relief camp in Karachi. Aalia, meanwhile, has gone into labor. Jeet takes a boat to Karachi to find Aalia, but, finding the building locked, makes his way to the military camp where he is met by the army personnel and an officer, who requests Jeet's presence at the Viceroy's house. He is made to sign some papers and, suddenly, he is no longer in India and a new life is beginning in Karachi.
The film's premise is that it portrays how the Hindu and Muslim communities in India lived in harmony until the second World War, when the Allied Powers barged into the country and, one might say, botched the Partition. The peace that existed in India before the Axis powers arrived is neatly encompassed by a chapter in Freedom at Midnight, in which Mountbatten's personal valet, Jeet, and his Muslim sous-chef Syed Ahmad, who lived and worked together on the same estate, share a memorable meal together.
Meanwhile, the Viceroy and his daughter are in England, making plans to return to India. India is to be partitioned along religious lines, with the bulk of the population in the Hindu-dominated northern half of the country. The family, including their son, the future Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, is to remain in the south. Mountbatten is uneasy about the latter, but the former is willing to stay put. The family will return to India and, at some point, set up residence at the family's former family home, Viceroy's House, situated on a sprawling estate in Simla in the north of India. The family will reside in the house for the next two years.
