Evidence-based programs to enhance social resources can improve the health and well-being of African American women. However, few programs are specifically targeted at improving the health of African American women.110 To improve resilience, social support, and promote equitable health in African American communities, the following strategies are recommended:

African American women also experience different mental health problems than other racial and ethnic groups. For example, in a nationally representative sample of women and men, African American women had a significantly higher lifetime prevalence of major depression, bipolar disorder, and anxiety disorders.107 Furthermore, African American women are more likely to use illicit drugs, have alcohol problems, and engage in high-risk sexual behaviors.108,109

Women of color are less likely to be screened or receive follow-up care after a cervical cancer screening.104 While African American women have higher rates of cervical cancer, they are less likely to receive early screening and are less likely to receive follow-up care.104 Cervical cancer screening is challenging for African American women in part because of lack of knowledge, access, and culturally-appropriate care.105,106
